Adolescence is a time of transition between childhood and adulthood. This is a time that involves physical, emotional as well as mental changes. While it can be typical for teenagers to experience mood swings or show some challenging behaviours, it can also be a very stressful and frustrating time for parents. Some parents may even feel helpless and powerless when their authority seems to be challenged constantly.
Here are some typical behaviours of Adolescents:
- Occasionally feeling moody & sensitive
- Concerned about appearances & physical changes
- Desiring privacy, greater freedom & independence
- Feeling tired & may need more sleep
- Raising questions about their identity, sexual orientation, culture & gender
- Valuing friendships more than family
- Wanting to be popular or in the right crowd
- Influenced by their peers

- Talking about death, dying, hurting self or suicide
- Experiencing frequent sadness and is often teary
- Changing sleeping or eating habits
- Gaining or losing weight suddenly
- Cutting or hurting self
- Writing letters to say goodbye or giving away meaningful personal belongings
- Being too tired or having too much energy
- Spending long hours on the internet
- Abusing drugs, alcohol or sex
- Addicted to internet pornography
- Hearing voices or seeing things that don’t exist
- Shoplifting, stealing, lying, destroying property of others
- Bullying behaviours
- Behaving aggressively towards people, animals or property
- Engaging in extreme risk-taking behaviours
Our office is located in the Vancouver -Oakridge / Kerrisdale area. Our BC Clinical Registered Counsellors provide counselling service for teenagers as well as their parents.
