What is Filial Therapy?

Filial Therapy is an empirically supported intervention which has been proven to be beneficial with various populations (Rennie & Landreth, 2000). Filial therapy is about training parents in basic play therapy techniques & principles. Parents are guided to respond to their children??s feelings and behaviours in a different way. By involving in Filial Therapy, parents can become a constructive force in changing their children??s challenging behaviours.

Filial Therapy is not limited to use with families and children experiencing difficulties. It can also be used with families who wish to strengthen their parent-child relationships.

Filial therapy can help parents to:

  • Respond to their children??s various emotions or challenging behaviours
  • Learn new skills to encourage appropriate behaviours in their children
  • Enjoy playing with their children and spending quality time together
  • Encourage their children??s co-operation and respect of limits
  • Positively influence their children more easily and readily

Parent-child Attachment Enhancement Play Session or Play Group
(approximate 6 to 8 sessions. Suitable for ages 2 to 12)

Parents and children join together in family sessions or in group settings to participate in various bonding activities. Attachment based activities are introduced in these sessions or groups to facilitate stronger bonds and to strengthen parent-child relationships. These activities are fun and enjoyable.
