Trauma, Abuse, and Crime Victims

If you've been through a life-threatening or deeply distressing experience such as a natural disaster, serious motor vehicle accident, violent assault, or abuse, it's normal to feel overwhelmed. While some people find that these emotions gradually fade, others may find that distress and anxiety persist, impacting their ability to function day-to-day. You may feel that the world is no longer safe, and everything is out of control. Counselling can provide you with the guidance needed to navigate these difficult emotions and walk with you through these experiences.

TYPES OF TRAUMA WE TREAT:

Family Trauma

Family trauma can stem from difficult childhood experiences, including verbal or physical abuse, neglect, or growing up in an excessively strict, dysfunctional, or critical household. These early-life challenges can deeply affect emotional well-being, shaping your sense of safety and security well into adulthood. Our counsellors are here to help you heal from these painful family dynamics and reclaim your sense of self.

Intimate Partner Trauma

Intimate partner trauma arises from abusive or unhealthy romantic relationships. This may include physical, emotional, or psychological abuse, and can leave deep scars, affecting your ability to trust and connect with others. Our team is skilled in helping you navigate the healing process, empowering you to build healthier relationships moving forward.

Accident Trauma

Experiencing a serious accident—whether on the road, at work, or in other settings—can have a lasting emotional impact and lead to symptoms of post-traumatic stress. If you're struggling with distressing memories, unsettling dreams, anxiety, or fear related to an accident, we can help you work through these feelings and regain your sense of control and safety. Our counsellors are experienced in working directly with ICBC to process claims if you have been in a car accident.

Crime Trauma

Being the victim of a crime can leave you feeling vulnerable and afraid. Whether you’ve experienced theft, assault, or another form of criminal activity, the emotional toll can be immense. We provide specialized counselling to help you rebuild your sense of security and process the trauma of the event. If you have been victimized in a criminal act, we also accept counselling claims through the Crime Victims Assistance Program.

Vicarious Trauma

Vicarious trauma occurs when you witness a traumatic event, such as an accident or violence, that leaves a lingering emotional impact. This can happen to you as a First Responder, or even if you were not directly involved as a bystander. Our counsellors can guide you through understanding these secondary traumas and offer tools for emotional recovery.

Workplace Trauma

Workplace trauma may result from experiences like bullying, harassment, or toxic environments. These experiences can deeply impact your self-esteem, confidence, and overall mental health, leading to excessive stress, anxiety, and depression. We offer support in processing these experiences, helping you to regain your sense of balance and well-being in your professional life.
