EMDR Therapy
Helping You Heal from Distressing Memories and Trauma
Some life experiences stay with us long after they have passed. Whether you've experienced a traumatic event, a difficult childhood, a motor vehicle accident, abuse, or another deeply distressing experience, painful memories can continue to affect your emotions, relationships, and daily life.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain process traumatic memories so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity. Rather than simply managing symptoms, EMDR helps many people resolve the underlying impact of trauma, allowing them to move forward with greater confidence and peace.
At Wishing Wells Counselling, our trained EMDR therapists provide a safe, supportive environment where healing can take place at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured psychotherapy approach that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories that may have become "stuck" after a traumatic or overwhelming experience.
During EMDR therapy, your counsellor will guide you through specific phases of treatment while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds. This process helps your brain process difficult memories in a healthier way, reducing the emotional distress they may continue to cause.
You remain awake, aware, and in control throughout each session. Your counsellor will explain every step of the process and ensure you feel comfortable before moving forward.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR was originally developed to treat trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but research has shown it can also be effective for a variety of concerns, including:
-
Acute Stress Disorder and PTSD
-
Motor vehicle accident trauma
-
Childhood trauma
-
Anxiety and panic attacks
-
Depression
-
Grief and loss
-
Disturbing memories
-
Phobias and fears
-
Workplace trauma
-
First responder trauma
-
Performance anxiety
Your counsellor will work with you to determine whether EMDR is the right therapeutic approach for your unique situation and goals.

What to Expect
Every person's healing journey is different. EMDR therapy begins by building a strong therapeutic relationship and ensuring you have the emotional management skills needed before processing difficult memories.
Your counsellor will take time to understand your history, discuss your goals, and explain how EMDR works. Treatment moves at a pace that feels safe and manageable, with your comfort and emotional well-being remaining the priority throughout the process.
For some people, EMDR becomes the primary focus of therapy. For others, it is integrated with other counselling approaches to provide the most effective care.
Is EMDR Right for You?
EMDR may be a good fit if you find that past experiences continue to affect your present life. You may notice recurring memories, strong emotional reactions, anxiety, avoidance, or a feeling that you've never fully recovered from something that happened months or even years ago.
An experienced EMDR therapist can help determine whether this approach is appropriate for your needs and develop a treatment plan that supports your healing.
